When we receive a request for support or information that a child may be in need of our assistance, we will need to complete an assessment.
Unless you are over 16 or you are not the parent/guardian that is calling us for assistance, we must have their consent that they are nominating you to speak on their behalf (advocating for them) before you telephone us unless there are significant concerns that your child may be at risk of or has already suffered significant harm.
The assessment will look at what your child’s circumstances and needs are, what your strengths as a family/parent are (for example, what is working well), what support you already have available to you, what outcomes you are seeking and what the barriers and / or concerns to achieving those outcomes as well as what help you feel would be beneficial. The assessment normally takes place in your own home and will involve the social worker talking to you all as a family and your child on their own.
Our aim is to work with you to ensure that we are able to meet your child’s needs appropriately. Sometimes that may involve referring your to other agencies/organisations within the community who may be better placed to meet your child’s needs. Unless your child and family have a high level of support needs, the help that we provide will be for a short time only.
There are also a wide range of statutory and voluntary organisations within Ceredigion that provide support to children. The Family Information Service also provides a wide range of information on activities and resources available to families both locally and nationally.
