Which elections can I vote in?
The elections you can vote in depend on:
- your age
- your citizenship, and
- where the election is held
Qualifying foreign citizens
Qualifying foreign citizens who live in Wales and are 16 or over can vote in:
- Welsh Parliament (the Senedd) elections
- Local Government elections in Wales
Who classes as a qualifying foreign citizen?
You class as a qualifying foreign citizen if you have, or are treated as having, leave to enter and remain in the UK, and you are not:
- a Commonwealth citizen, or
- a citizen of the Republic of Ireland

Voting at 16
In Wales, you can register to vote at 14 years old. You will be kept on the electoral register until you are old enough to vote.
Registering at 14 means that you will be able to vote in the first election after you turn 16.
At 16 years old, you can vote in:
- Welsh Parliament (the Senedd) elections, and
- Local Government elections in Wales
This means that you can have your say on topics that affect you and be actively involved in the decision-making process for Wales and your local area.
You need to be 18 years old to vote in UK Government elections.
