Direction Signs

In the UK, a hierarchical system of direction signage is followed:

  • Motorway routes are signed with a blue background and white text;
  • Primary routes (dual carriageways and trunk roads) linking large town and cities are signed with a green background and white text;
  • All other routes, including A roads not designated as primary routes, are signed with a white background and black text;
  • Direction signs to tourist destinations are signed with a brown background and white text for all types of road. Regarding tourism signs on Trunk Roads (the A487 & the A44) you will need to contact the Welsh Government. Regarding signs on county roads please contact Technical Services. Please note that tourist attractions are expected to meet the full costs of signage, including design and installation and must meet set criteria to qualify. Current charges are listed on the main Council web site in the fees and charges pages.
  • Temporary direction signs typically have a yellow background and black text, although other designs may be used. Sometimes red signs with a white text are used to convey information.

A successful direction sign scheme must be clear and coherent to both local residents and visitors to Ceredigion. It is important to ensure that drivers are not overloaded with information on the approach to a junction but at the same time have sufficient information to make an informed decision about which route to take, and to be able to manoeuvre safely and successfully.

The position of a direction sign relative to a junction aims to ensure that drivers have a suitable line of sight onto the sign and sufficient time to process the information on it.

The majority of routes within Ceredigion already have a direction sign scheme in place. Any requests for new signs will only be considered if they would be beneficial to a significant number of drivers.
