Multiply Project adds up for Healthcare worker learning maths
Becky has been working in healthcare since 2016, and her ambition is to become a qualified nurse one day. She recently secured a position on the ‘Healthcare Apprenticeship Scheme’, working in Bronglais Hospital for Hywel Dda University Health Board.
Earlier this year, while applying for a job, Becky realised she needed a GCSE in Maths. Although she felt her maths skills were good, Becky never achieved a grade C in school. She had heard that Dysgu Bro Ceredigion offered the ‘Essential Skills Application of Number’ qualification course through the Shared Prosperity Fund ‘Multiply’ project which would provide her with an equivalent qualification to GCSE Maths (grades A-C).
Becky wasted no time and contacted Dysgu Bro about classes. Becky said: “I had amazing support from the very beginning, receiving a reply to my email the same day and starting the course two weeks later”.
After being assigned a tutor, they set up a suitable day and time for lessons that fit around Becky’s work commitments. She added: “My tutor has been absolutely fantastic, very helpful and patient with my learning. I miss our weekly catchups. Some things I learned were never taught in school. There was no pressure, it was very relaxed, and you felt like you could learn at your own pace. I have three children and work, so it fit in with work and family life well.”
Becky is thrilled that she has now passed her qualification, which has significantly improved her confidence with numbers. She said she looked forward to the sessions knowing she would learn something new each week. Becky plans to continue her journey as a Healthcare Apprentice until she succeeds in becoming a qualified nurse. She stated: “I would never have been able to access my apprenticeship without this maths qualification, and I am very grateful.”
Ceredigion Councillor Wyn Thomas, Cabinet Member for Schools and Through-Age Learning said: “ The care sector is very important to Ceredigion residents and it’s good to know that Dysgu Bro has been able to support Becky to fulfil her ambition to start the course and to work locally. Congratulations Becky”.
