Ceredigion’s Welsh Language Charter launches Cynefin ar Gân on Welsh Language Music Day

On Welsh Language Music Day, 07 February 2025, Ceredigion’s Welsh Language Charter is proud to launch 6 new songs as part of Cynefin ar Gân.

The project started back in the Autumn when the Welsh Council for the County's schools came together to collaborate on creating lyrics to songs about their Cynefin (habitat). The Welsh Councils had the opportunity to work with local poets from Ceredigion. The schools had the opportunity to work with:

  • Ysgolion Cylch Aeron District Schools - Dwynwen Lloyd Llywelyn
  • Ysgolion Cylch Llandysul and Cardigan District Schools - Ceri Wyn Jones
  • Ysgolion Cylch Lampeter and Tregaron District Schools - Enfys Hatcher Davies
  • Ysgolion Cylch Aberystwyth District Schools - Arwel Rocet Jones

Following the creation of the lyrics, there was a collaboration with musician Mei Gwynedd to create a melody for the great lyrics. Then, in January, came the opportunity for the pupils to come together to record the songs with Mei Gwynedd. There were four special days, certainly, an event and experience that will remain in the memory of the pupils.

Anwen Eleri, Welsh Language Support Officer at Ceredigion schools, said: "The pupils loved it, it was an opportunity to embellish the world famous star of the music scene while recording the songs. The Transitional Schools had a special opportunity to collaborate with rapper Mr Phormula to create bilingual lyrics and a rap. It was a great way to show the pupils that it is possible to work bilingually.”

Anwen added: “We are very proud of all the work and support there has been to the Cynefin ar Gân project, it has certainly been an exciting project. It was a great opportunity to work with others poets and musicians in our country.”

The songs can be heard here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mirswi__0-xM7DkPjM8roowZRFaLWjHz?usp=drive_link and will be available on digital platforms soon.

Councillor Wyn Thomas, Ceredigion’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Lifelong Learning and Skills, said: “This project has offered pupils a fun way to learn about their Cynefin. The pupils have had the opportunity to collaborate and network with each other, to get to know their Cynefin, contribute in writing and record their songs. Da iawn pawb!”

A launch event will take place at a Dydd Miwsig Cymru Gig at Pontrhydfendigaid Pavilion on 07 February 2025 where 650 primary pupils will come together to see Morgan Elwy and the Band, Mei Gwynedd and the Band perform. Songs from Cynefin a'r Gân will also be performed with the pupils and Mei Gwynedd.
