Aberystwyth Ramblers donate gates to improve public rights of way
Walkers exploring the paths in and around Aberystwyth over the past few years may have noticed new gates and plaques marking improvements along their routes. These enhancements are part of a wider effort to make the countryside more accessible and behind many of them is a story of community dedication and generosity.
For over three decades, the Public Rights of Way Team at Ceredigion County Council has worked closely with volunteers to maintain and improve walking routes across the county. Many of these volunteers are members of local Ramblers groups, whose support has been invaluable.
Now, Aberystwyth Ramblers have gone a step further by donating funds raised through the sale of their popular guidebook, Walks around Aberystwyth and Cwm Rheidol. Written by a collective of members, proceeds from the book have been used to purchase materials and furniture such as gates to upgrade paths featured in the guide. Members have also rolled up their sleeves to help install the improvements themselves.
Replacing stiles with gates makes walking routes more accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Upgraded gates also enhance the overall walking experience, encouraging more people to enjoy the outdoors. Access to nature and green spaces is widely recognised as vital for physical and mental wellbeing.
Councillor Clive Davies, Ceredigion Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration and Carbon Management, said: “Aberystwyth Ramblers not only support our small team in the Aberystwyth area with maintaining paths, but have gone further by fundraising through their book sales. Thanks to their generosity with time, effort, and funding, we've been able to upgrade and replace many stiles and gates in Aberystwyth and the surrounding area.”
