The following school is closed today, due to power outages:

  • Ysgol Rhos Helyg School, Bronant campus

However, the Llangeitho Campus, is inviting pupils and staff from Ysgol Rhos Helyg Bronant to join them again today. Pupils that normally travel to the Bronant campus by bus will be taken to the Llangeitho campus.

The following schools will be closed today, due to power outages:

09 December, 16:00 - Advice on food surplus

If you’ve had a power cut, here is some advice on what to do with food waste:

  • Please remove the food from its packaging.
  • Put the food waste in your food waste bin and the packaging in your clear recycling bag as appropriate .
  • If your food waste bin is full please place excess food waste in a bucket or small container clearly labelled “Food Waste” and place it out for collection with your food waste bin on your next scheduled collection day.

The Penmorfa Offices Aberaeron are also open for a warm drink, and if you wish to charge your mobile phones.

We are hoping to bring an update on provision in the Lampeter area soon.

Ceredigion County Council has opened the following Centres today (Sunday 8 December) in order for residents to stay warm, have a shower and charge mobile phones. Warm drinks will also be provided:

Aberystwyth - Plascrug Leisure Centre

We are working to prepare provision in the Lampeter area also, and we will provide additional information in due course.

We are contacting all vulnerable residents that have a care plan, and responding to all requests for support. Please check on any vulnerable neighbours and let us know if you require assistance.

Please note that the A485 between Abermad and Llanfarian which had been re-opened is now closed again.

We are aiming to re-open this road later this afternoon.

Our Teams and contractors are out on the network clearing trees since first light this morning, focusing initially on the main roads (A & B) and so it may be some time before trees affecting other roads may be attended to.

The following roads which were previously closed due to fallen trees are now passable with care:

  • A4120 Pontrhydygroes – Devils Bridge
  • A485 Llanilar to Llanfarian
  • B4342 Stags Head to Llangeitho

There will still be a significant amount of debris and water on all roads and the public are advised to exercise extreme care when driving.

Whilst the high winds associated with Storm Darragh have eased, there are still a significant number of large trees affecting access along the highway network, and so driving conditions remain extremely hazardous.

The Council’s Teams and contractors will be out again this morning to try and clear the trees, focusing initially on the main roads (A & B) and so it may be some time before trees affecting other roads may be attended to.

Even after the trees have been cleared, there will still be a significant amount of debris and floodwater which means that extreme care should be taken when driving.

We will look to post further updates when available, and would again like to thank the public for their patience and understanding at this challenging time.

A flood warning has been issued by Natural Resources Wales for the River Aeron in Aberaeron for property and roads close to the river in Aberaeron including the council offices and public park; and for the River Teifi at Llanybydder relating to the caravan site, property in Station Terrace, Bridge Street, Highmead Terrace and highmead Arms Hotel.

We are aware of a significant number of fallen trees and poles/cables across the County that are affecting access across the highway network, and driving conditions remain extremely hazardous.

Our teams and contractors have been out overnight and throughout the day clearing fallen trees to keep roads open, but the number of trees that have fallen, and continue to fall coupled with the dangerous working conditions mean that it will not be possible to open many roads overnight, and so those trees/roads will be prioritised tomorrow.

We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding at this time.

A flood warning has been issued by Natural Resources Wales for River Ystwyth at Rhydyfelin and Llanfarian, River Aeron at Talsarn and River Rheidol for low lying areas, Aberystwyth.

Flooding is expected for isolated property at Llanfarian, Abermad and at Pont Castell; property between the Red Lion Public House and the river and the B4337 road at Talsarn; and the A44 road at Lovesgrove, the A4120 road and the playing fields and Pavilions at Llanbadarn, including the caravan sites at Aberystwyth Holiday Village and Grovener Farm.

The Red weather warning for wind is no longer in place as of 11:00 today, however the Amber warning for wind remains in place until 21:00.

As conditions remain hazardous, Ceredigion residents and visitors are advised to avoid all but essential travel.

Ceredigion crews have been working overnight and are continuing work across the County.

A flood warning has been issued by Natural Resources Wales for River Teifi at Pontrhydfendigaid and Lampeter.

Flooding is expected for properties adjacent to and to the north of the River Teifi in Pontrhydfendigaid, including Bridge Street. Flooding is also expected to the north of the River Teifi in Lampeter, including the supermarket and Leisure centre.

The Yellow weather warning for rain has been updated for Ceredigion and is now in place from 15:00 on Friday 06 December to 21:00 Saturday 07 December, 2024.

Due to the Red weather warning for wind between 03:00 and 11:00 on Saturday 07 December 2024, the following events / services will be closed for public safety:

  • Felinfach Pantomime on Saturday 7 December
  • County Leisure Centres
  • County Wellbeing Centres
  • County Libraries
  • Ceredigion Museum
  • County Household Waste Sites

There won’t be any public transport available during the morning, including Traws Cymru bus services. For further information on Traws Cymru services, contact ‘Transport for Wales’.

A Red wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Ceredigion which is valid from 03:00 to 11:00 on Saturday 07 December, 2024. The Met Office forecast that gusts of 90mph or more are to be expected on Saturday morning.

Ceredigion residents and visitors are advised to stay safe from the impact of this extreme weather. Avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions as widespread damage, power and travel disruption is likely. Being outside in high winds is a danger for potential injury, stay indoors if you can.

Power disruption is likely, try and prepare in advance by gathering torches, phone power banks and other essential items. The winds could also lead to power cuts and affect Council-run services.

Coastal areas are also in danger due to large waves. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Residents are also reminded of the need to remain safe outside of the period of the Red Warning, due to the Amber warning that is also in force between 01:00 to 21:00 on Saturday 07 December 2024.

The Yellow weather wind warning is also still in place from 15:00 Friday 06 December until 06:00 Sunday 08 December, 2024, and a Yellow weather rain warning from 15:00 Friday 06 December until 12:00 on Saturday 07 December, 2024.

An Amber weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office and is valid from 03:00 Saturday 07 December until 21:00 Saturday 07 December, 2024. 

A Yellow weather wind warning has also been issued from 15:00 Thursday 05 December until 06:00 Sunday 08 December, 2024, and a Yellow weather rain warning from 15:00 Friday 06 December until 12:00 on Saturday 07 December, 2024.

The Met Office forecast gusts that will frequently reach 60-70 mph and, along exposed coastal stretches 70-80 mph is possible at times, with 20-30mm of rainfall is expected quite widely. Some parts of Wales likely to see 50-60 mm over this period which may lead to some flooding and disruption in places.

Ceredigion residents and visitors are advised to be safe and not make unnecessary journeys during the weather warnings. 

The public are reminded to be careful whilst travelling as the winds may result in fallen trees and debris being present on the highway. The public are also asked to be vigilant in relation to the potential damage to buildings and other structures, resulting in tiles and other debris falling in public areas.

The winds could also lead to power cuts and affect Council-run services.
