Cynefin in Ceredigion

At Ceredigion Museum on 26 October families enjoyed activities to celebrate all the different cultures and heritages of people living in Ceredigion. The event was funded by the South West and Mid Wales Community Cohesion Fund.

Emmauel Okonin Annang leading the drumming workshop.The family fun day was organised by Ceredigion County Council, Aberystwyth University and Hywel Dda University Health Board. The theme was ‘Cynefin’, the Welsh word for ‘the place where we belong’. 

Councillor Catrin M S Davies, Ceredigion County Council’s Equality Champion started the day by reminding people of the many languages spoken by people in Ceredigion, including Polish, Romanian, Arabic, Chinese, French, Hungarian, Nepalese, Igbo and Pashto as well as Welsh and English. She said: "We want everyone in Ceredigion, including people whose heritage and culture derive from other parts of the world, to feel that Ceredigion is their Cynefin.”

Families were encouraged to taste different food, decorate pebbles, play giant connect four and join a very interactive drumming workshop. They also had the opportunity to talk with each other, find out what they have in common and share stories.

There were exhibitions and information stalls by Lampeter mosque, St Paul’s Methodist Centre, West Wales Domestic Abuse Service, Hywel Dda University Health Board Community Outreach team, Papyrus, Aberystwyth University, Lampeter University, Aberystwyth App, Dyfed Powys Police, Ceredigion Council’s Equality and Inclusion team, Carers and Communities teams, and Ethnic Youth Support team.

The day ended with a poetry performance by Suzanne Smart and closing remarks from Professor Uzo Iwobi CBE, Chief Executive of Race Council Cymru, Lead for Black History Wales and Coordinator for Black Lives Matter Wales Collective.
