Ceredigion County Council seeks public input on revised taxi and private hire vehicle licensing policy
Ceredigion County Council is inviting residents to provide their views on the draft revised Hackney Carriage (Taxi) and Private Hire Vehicle Drivers Policy and Conditions. This consultation aims to ensure that taxis and private hire vehicles continue to provide a vital service to rural communities, the night-time economy, and disabled passengers, while also promoting social inclusion.
Taxis and private hire vehicles are essential for many residents, particularly in rural areas where other forms of public transport may be limited. They play a crucial role in ensuring safe and comfortable travel, contributing significantly to the local economy and community well-being.
As the Licensing Authority under the Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1976 and the Town and Police Clauses Act 1847, Ceredigion County Council is committed to maintaining high regulatory standards. The revised policy has been developed in line with statutory UK Government guidance and the Welsh Government’s recommended guidance on the harmonisation of taxi and private hire vehicle licensing in Wales (2021).
Residents are encouraged to read the draft document and complete the online survey to share their views. For those who prefer to receive the information in a different format, contact the council at 01545 570881 or email clic@ceredigion.gov.uk. Paper copies of the survey are also available at local libraries and leisure centres. Completed surveys can be returned to local libraries or sent to the Licensing Team at Ceredigion County Council, Canolfan Rheidol, Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, SY23 3UE.
Councillor Matthew Vaux, Ceredigion’s Cabinet Member for Partnerships, Housing, Legal and Governance and Public Protection, said: “We are committed to ensuring that our taxi and private hire services meet the highest standards of safety and comfort for all passengers. This revised policy reflects our dedication to supporting rural communities, enhancing the night-time economy, and promoting social inclusion. We value the input of our residents and encourage everyone to participate in this consultation to help us shape a policy that best serves the needs of our community.”
