The Deputy First Minister with responsibility for Climate Change, Huw Irranca-Davies visited Aberaeron to see the progress of the Coastal Defence Scheme on Friday 04 October.

The Deputy First Minister was greeted by Ceredigion County Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Alun Williams, Ceredigion’s Cabinet Member responsible for Highways and Environmental Services and Carbon Management, Councillor Keith Henson, Chief Executive Eifion Evans and other project representatives.

Speaking from Aberaeron, the Deputy First Minister said: “The scale of the work here in Aberaeron is a real eye opener - and is essential for Aberaeron and its community to be protected for generations to come. I am incredibly grateful to the community for their patience during the construction of this scheme. This is a huge civil engineering project occurring within a historic town. The scheme is being delivered at pace, and we look forward to the work completing next year.”

The visit included a presentation on the scheme by Council officers and other project representatives as well as a tour of the construction site to South Pier and Pwll Cam.

The construction works by Bam Nuttall include a refurbishment and re-building of South Pier breakwater, construction of a new breakwater at North Pier, a flood wall construction including a new masonry and glass flood wall, grouting repairs and flood gate at Pwll Cam inner harbour and improvements to existing defences at South Beach.

Councillor Keith Henson added: “Its great to see this important scheme progressing well. This scheme will improve the level of protection afforded to the many businesses and homes in Aberaeron and will preserve the unique and historical character of the area for future generations. We look forward to seeing the completed work next year.”
